Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I set up TaxLocationTracker for the first time?
After downloading the app from the App Store, open it and follow the onboarding prompts. You'll be asked to select your primary state of residence and grant location permissions. Choose "Always Allow" when prompted for location access so the app can log your state in the background throughout the day. Once setup is complete, the app begins tracking automatically.
Why does the app need "Always Allow" location permission?
TaxLocationTracker needs background location access to record which state you're in each day, even when the app isn't actively open. If you select "While Using the App" instead, the app can only log your location when you manually open it, which may result in missed days. Your location data stays entirely on your device and is never transmitted to any server.
Can I change my home state after initial setup?
Yes. Go to Settings within the app and update your primary state of residence. This change applies going forward and does not alter historical records. If you've relocated mid-year, your reports will accurately reflect days in both your previous and new home state.

Tracking and Accuracy

How does the app determine which state I'm in?
The app uses your device's GPS and location services to periodically check your geographic position throughout the day. It then maps that position to a state using on-device reverse geocoding. The state where you spend the majority of the day is recorded as your location for that date.
What happens if I'm near a state border?
The app takes multiple location readings throughout the day rather than relying on a single check. If you live or work near a state border, the state where you spend the most time that day is the one recorded. You can always review and manually correct any day from the app's history view if needed.
Can I manually edit a day's recorded location?
Yes. Tap on any date in the calendar or history view to review and correct the recorded state. This is useful for days when you may have traveled late at night, spent time in multiple states, or had limited GPS reception. Manual corrections are clearly marked in exported reports for transparency.
Does the app track my exact GPS coordinates?
No. TaxLocationTracker only records the state you are in for each day. It does not store your precise GPS coordinates, street address, or any other granular location data. The app is designed to collect only the minimum information necessary for state-level tax day counting.

Reports and Exporting

How do I export my location report for my CPA?
Navigate to the Reports section in the app. Select the tax year and, if desired, a custom date range. Tap "Export" to generate a summary. You can then share the report via email, AirDrop, or save it to Files. The report includes a day-by-day breakdown as well as a per-state summary of total days.
What format are the exported reports?
Reports can be exported as PDF for easy sharing and printing, or as CSV for import into spreadsheets and tax preparation software. Both formats include the same data: dates, states, day counts, and any manual corrections you've made.
Can I access reports from previous tax years?
Yes. The app maintains your complete location history for as long as it remains installed on your device. You can generate and export reports for any prior year. This is especially useful for states that use multi-year look-back tests when evaluating residency claims.

Privacy and Data

Is my location data sent to a server?
No. All data is processed and stored locally on your device. TaxLocationTracker does not transmit, upload, or sync your location data to any external server. You have complete ownership and control of your records at all times.
What happens to my data if I delete the app?
Because all data is stored locally on your device, deleting the app will permanently remove your location history. We strongly recommend exporting your reports before uninstalling. There is no cloud backup, so once the app is removed, the data cannot be recovered.
How much battery does the app use?
TaxLocationTracker is designed for minimal battery impact. It uses iOS significant location change monitoring rather than continuous GPS polling, which means it only activates when your device detects meaningful movement. Most users see negligible impact on daily battery life.
Quick Troubleshooting

Days Not Being Recorded

Check that Location Services are set to "Always" for TaxLocationTracker in your iPhone Settings. Also confirm that Background App Refresh is enabled for the app.

Wrong State Recorded

Tap the date in the history view and select the correct state. This can happen near state borders or when traveling late at night. Manual corrections are noted in exports.

App Not Opening After Update

Force-close the app by swiping up from the app switcher, then reopen. If the issue persists, restart your device. Your data is preserved through updates and restarts.

Export Not Sending

Ensure you have an active internet connection if sharing via email. Alternatively, save the report to Files first, then share from there. Both PDF and CSV exports work offline for local saving.
